Preparing for your Beach Session

For Clients

There’s something timeless about beach sessions—the soft light, the movement of the water, and the way everything feels a little slower and more intentional. But what makes those dreamy, effortless images come to life isn’t just the location or the camera—it’s how prepared and comfortable you feel going into it.

This guide is here to help you feel relaxed, confident, and fully present so your session feels less like something to “perform” for and more like a beautiful experience you get to enjoy.

What to wear

Start with your wardrobe. The beach photographs beautifully in soft, neutral tones—think whites, creams, sandy beiges, soft blues, and muted pastels. These colors blend naturally with the environment and keep the focus on connection and emotion.

That said, don’t be afraid of jewel tones. Deep emerald, rust, navy, burgundy, and mustard can create a richer, more dramatic look against the soft tones of the beach. They photograph beautifully in golden hour light and can give your gallery a completely different, elevated feel.

Choose flowy, natural fabrics like linen, cotton, gauze, and chiffon. These move with the wind and add softness and motion to your images. Most importantly, wear something that feels like you—comfortable, flattering, and easy to move in.

Avoid loud patterns, neon colors, and overly matching outfits. Coordinated is great—identical is not necessary.

Timing + light

Beach sessions are typically scheduled around golden hour, the hour before sunset. This is when the light is soft, warm, and glowing. It is the most flattering and cinematic time of day for photos. However, if you want sunrise or have something else in mind let’s chat.

Hair + makeup

Think natural but elevated. A slightly more defined makeup look than your everyday routine photographs best in natural light. For hair, soft waves or styles that move with the wind tend to work beautifully. The breeze is part of the story—embrace it.

Session Preparation Checklist

Here’s how to feel fully ready and stress-free going into your session:

Before the session:

  • Lay out and try on all outfits a week before your session
  • Steam or iron clothing ahead of time (wrinkle-free photographs cleaner and more polished)
  • Make sure outfits fit and feel comfortable
  • Pack outfits for each family member in labeled bags or hang them together
  • Keep accessories simple and intentional (barefoot is always a great beach option)

Day of session:

  • Dress kids in their outfits right before leaving the house to keep them clean and comfortable
  • No candy or slushies before session (can turn mouth red or blue and it has happened)
  • Bring a backup outfit for kids (and yourself if you’d like) just in case
  • Eat a light snack before arriving so no one is starting hungry or tired
  • Show up 10 minutes early to allow time to walk to the location and settle in
  • Give kids a quick breather—let them see the water, get their wiggles out, and adjust to the space

What to bring:

  • Water for everyone (hydration makes a big difference, especially in sun and sand)
  • Easy, non-messy snacks (goldfish, fruit snacks, crackers, etc.)
  • Small toys or comfort items for kids if they may need it (nothing too large or distracting)
  • A blanket to sit or snuggle in—these photograph beautifully during in-between moments
  • Towels if you plan to let kids get wet or play in the waves at the end
  • A change of clothes for the ride home (highly recommended for kids and often appreciated by adults too)
  • Baby wipes or wipes for sandy hands and faces
  • Bug spray or sunscreen applied before arriving (depending on season)

During your session:

  • Let go of perfection—movement, laughter, and even chaos often create the best images
  • Let kids explore, run, and play (the beach is meant for them to experience it)
  • Don’t worry about posing—I will guide you through everything naturally
  • Focus on connection over perfection

A final note

The most meaningful beach images don’t come from perfectly posed moments—they come from presence. Windblown hair, sandy toes, kids laughing, quiet in-between moments with the people you love most… that’s where the magic lives.

Your session is not about getting everything “right.” It’s about slowing down long enough to actually feel it.
